aquaponics&hydroponics

What is Aquaponics?

It is a food production system that combines conventional Aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish, prawns and crayfish) with Hydroponics (growing plants in water). Put simply - the plants take up the nutrients (fish waste) and water through their roots before the water is returned to the the fish. This system of recycling water between tanks requires very little water usage, approximately 1/10th of what would be required to grow plants in the ground.

Terracorp Industries manufactures tubs and troughs that are suitable for use for both plants and fish. The pictures below are of our troughs in use at the Aquaculture Centre at Channel Island.
